Research Internship: Bio-based plastics - a viable and sustainable solution? Rabobank

Imagine…
Imagine you can contribute to an even better Rabobank. A responsibility with real impact which you shape as an intern joining Rabobank’s RaboResearch Food&Agribusiness (‘RRFA’) department. RRFA is part of Rabobank’s division Banking For Food Inspiration Centre (’BFIC’) which is at the core of the bank’s strategy ‘Feeding the World Sustainably by 2050’. RRFA consists of about 90 analysts across the world that each are dedicated to one or more food and agribusiness sectors.

This internship is within RRFA is in the Supply Chains team that is responsible for all research related to (sustainable) food packaging and logistics trends worldwide.

If you are interested in topics such as sustainability, waste, recycling and food packaging, this might be the perfect internship for you. Globally, there is a growing pressure on retailers and brand owners to reduce the amount of plastic packaging put on the market and/or to find more sustainable solutions than are on the market today. Therefore the plastic packaging industry is nearing a stage of disruption in which innovation is absolutely key for survival. In addition to for example working on placing products on the market with a higher level of recycled (plastic) content, key stakeholders are also looking towards bio-based plastics as a potential sustainable option.

Create an impact

We are looking for an intern for a 3-4mth period who is interested in mapping the global bio-based plastic packaging sector, building on existing research.
A ‘mapping’ means producing an overview of key players globally (capacity, technology, stage of operation, investors, feedstock used etc.), key research institutes and technology developments, relevant legislation and other factors.
The aim of the research is to get a clear impression of the current opportunities and hurdles related to large commercial-scale deployment of bio-based plastics, and to help answer the question if this really is a future/current viable AND sustainable alternative to fossil-based plastics.
Expected output is in-depth databases (e.g. in excel) with key data, as well as power point slides with key findings (no written reports).

With your talents
If we ask your friends to describe you in a few key words, the answer should be: customer-oriented, self-motivated, pleasant to work with.
In addition to those competencies, it is important for this specific role that you recognize the following as well:

You are intrinsically interested in this topic;
You are driven and enthusiastic, with strong research, excel, and research skills;
You should have a relevant academic background e.g. studying biology, sustainability, renewable energy, engineering or another relevant subject matter.
